Ruck w/ boots division:  40 lb minimum.

Went to bed before 8pm, since I was supposed to get up at 3:45 to do the ½ marathon.  The plan was to meet at 4:15 in the lobby to get to the start of the race by 4:30.  I heard my alarm, but I figured I’d sleep in for another 5 minutes.  I got out of bed at 4:13.  Good thing I went to bed dressed or that would have been awkward to have all those people wait for me.

Matt, Aaron and I rucked it.

The race was poorly organized.  They said that they would start the walkers 15 minutes after the runners, but they just had us line up behind the runners and start at the same time without making it clear.  They also started pulling the directional signs before all the walkers made it by so they missed a turn or two.

As we were rucking we would ask the people at the aid stations if there were any other ruckers in front of us.  We got varying responses.  From 2-3 guys to about 8.

We were getting worried because we couldn’t see anybody with a ruck in front of us.  And here you can see a couple miles in front of you, because it’s so flat.  We really wanted to place.  Luckily we weren’t competing against each other, since we are all in different age groups.

We started passing runners around the 3 mile mark.  They weren’t really running though.  Aaron and I left Matt at around 6-7 miles.  I told Aaron to leave me at around 11 miles.

I ran into another rucker carrying his unit's flag at 12 miles.   I couldn’t see him earlier because we had gotten back to the living areas and there were buildings and walls and turns.  I was able to pass him.  At that point I was groaning.  Loudly.

Aaron was 2nd overall and 1st in his age group.  Matt came in 2nd in his age group.  He also had ten pounds extra (they weighed us with and without our packs at the end) and loaded his pack wrong.  His weight wasn’t evenly distributed and he didn’t do anything to cushion the plates in his backpack.

I wonder if all the military guys felt bad that a pair of civilians (Aaron and me) took 2nd and 3rd.  I know the guy in fourth place did.  He was telling the people at the check-in that no one passed him.  This was after Aaron had told them he passed a guy with a flag.  Then they called me over and flag guy said, “Oh yeah, he passed me too.”  I would have been surprised if he didn’t remember me since we had a discussion as I was passing him one mile earlier.

Then he started complaining that we had an advantage because we ran with backpacks and he had to run with a ruck.  Doesn’t he realize that rucks are designed to distribute weight evenly?  He also had a frame which kept the plates from rubbing on his back.  Some people.

Feeling good.  Took 800 mg of Motrin just now so I should be feeling even better soon.

Got a half moon Colonel's coin from a Lieutenant.

Garmin didn't aquire satellites for a little while, but I still think the course was short.  It's okay though, because I really wanted to stop.

Nice seeing you back. Lost you there for some time, thought maybe Sasha had banned you or something...nice race. 2:35 with a 40 pound bag + boots = awesome !!!!

Cool ruck race ;) Who comes up with this stuff? Poor sports are NO fun :p

From Burt on Sat, Oct 03, 2009 at 12:11:41 from 98.167.151.26

Yeah right Marion. That guy was a poor sport. I went on a 10 mile hike with a backpack that just strapped over my shoulders, so I can truly say that your are the man Mike!

From Bonnie on Sat, Oct 03, 2009 at 14:34:33 from 75.164.100.129

Great Job Mike!! You are ready my man!

I'm glad you don't cut and paste ALL our emails here!

I wrote you back to your work email address. Hope you got it. Let me know when you can talk!

Nicely done! My back hurts after reading that.

From Kelli on Sat, Oct 03, 2009 at 23:10:16 from 75.162.136.134

Call me dumb, but what does it mean to ruck? Is that short for rucksack (with 40 pounds in it?)

From montelepsy on Sun, Oct 04, 2009 at 09:08:28 from 155.85.58.253

Eric, I probably should be banned, but it was more of a self-imposed exile. At work we had to clean up a few things before the end of our fiscal year. It ended 30 Sep, so now I can goof off more.

I don't know who comes up with this stuff, Marion. Probably the same guy who decided that when we're done with our identically sized lunch trays that we stack them according to color.

It's good to be the man, Burt.

Thanks Bonnie! How are we going to break it to Dean?

Hon, I can talk or skype tonight noon your time.

Fly, you read with your back?

Dumb (just following orders Kelli), rucking is a term for backpacking. And you are correct it is short for rucksack.

From Kelli on Sun, Oct 04, 2009 at 10:18:13 from 75.162.136.134

Thanks for following orders. I wanted to get that straight before I read the report so I would not be confused. BUT, I really am dumb because if I had just read the report I could have figured it out.

So, do they do these races often where you compete in the ruck class? Is it just a military thing? Very interesting...men glutton for punishment by carrying extra weight!!

Nice job. And someone needs to smack Mr Poor Sport up against the head.

Kelli,

Since I've been here, I've only heard of 3 (one was a 10k and the other was a 2-miler). This was my first one, but I've been rucking since Jun.

There were between 40-50 guys that entered the ruck division and one lady, so I was in the top 4-5% for guys and only in the top 50% for ladies.

well done awesome race and with boots and stuff :-)

From Kelli on Tue, Oct 06, 2009 at 10:37:24 from 71.219.96.151

You need to recruit more women, that is a horrible statistic!

From montelepsy on Fri, Oct 09, 2009 at 05:26:31 from 155.85.58.253

Thanks Sam.

You're right Kelli. I think they should change the rules to make it a percentage of your bodyweight or something. The one lady I saw rucking couldn't have been more than 120 lbs. I've seen her limping around the chow hall lately :)

From argentinerocket on Fri, Oct 09, 2009 at 10:01:37 from 74.9.147.114

I didn't know what rucking was either... but it sure sounds pretty cool! Does it have to be a 40-lbs ruck? Does it qualify as rucking when I run home with my backpack with clothes, makeup and books and stuff?

Glad to see you back Mike, without your witty comments, that leaves Burt as the funniest guy on the blog, if you know what I mean...

If you got any blisters because of your boots ask Rachel to send you some cupcake bandaids, they're cool :)

From Burt on Fri, Oct 09, 2009 at 10:49:53 from 98.167.151.26

Seriously, I've been meaning to tell you. I'm so glad you're back, too. Do you know what kind of pressure I've been under being the ONLY funny person on the blog? That's a lot of pressure. So many nights I would cry myself to sleep thinking, "Will tomorrow be the day I run out material?" I mean, who else is funny? Riverton Paul? I taught him everything he knows.

From Eric Day on Fri, Oct 09, 2009 at 11:10:08 from 189.192.74.151

Poor Burt (pat on the back), sorry for the tremendous pressure you were under...

From Teena on Sat, Oct 10, 2009 at 11:10:52 from 67.177.20.13

YOU ARE BACK!!!!

Don't you realize how much you were missed??

First and foremost ... you are so stinkin' tough!!! Seriously. For example, I always beg my hubby to go biking on my long runs so that he can carry my fluids because I think they weigh me down!!!! :)

You're a stud my friend!!!

Congrats on the first and third places, Champ!

From Teena on Sun, Oct 11, 2009 at 15:36:13 from 67.177.20.13

Just thought you should know that orange skittles rock!!! Why did I not know this before???

From montelepsy on Sun, Oct 18, 2009 at 02:50:52 from 155.85.58.253

You're definitely rucking, Lucia. If it didn't take up to 3 weeks to get here, then I'd be begging Rachel for real cupcakes.

Burt, one day Paul will be able to snatch the rubber chicken out of your hand...

Thanks Teena, for the morale boost and the skittle tip. I don't taste the rainbow much, especially since I'm too busy with a 5 lb bag of gummies.
