Eric, Here's a link some training plans. I'm trying out the 10k plan. I like it so far. I find it hard to hit the paces though.

I have heard a distance runner say that she can't do a speedy 5K because it takes her a little while to get up to her marathon pace (and she is a total kick butt runner). Maybe it's just that compromise most runners make.

Thanks for visiting folks.

You make me blush, Burt.

I once sent my youngest an oragami when I was on an extended trip. She loves bugs. I found instructions to fold a dragonfly at the local library. When she opened the envelope, she completely unfolded what I had painstakingly made. I haven't been able to find the same one since, even on the internet.

Most of the ones I find aren't proportioned right. They either have fat wings or a fat body.

So if you ever find a good dragonfly, then let me know. Or if you're at the Offutt AFB library in Nebraska, check out one of their three origami books.

From Huans32 on Thu, Feb 11, 2010 at 08:57:58 from 138.64.8.51

From Camille on Thu, Feb 11, 2010 at 16:14:28 from 71.223.71.93

Mike! I'm glad you are healing up and are able to run. :o)

Did she unfold it to see how it was done and then couldn't put it back together? When I was in highschool, one of my friends folded a shrimp and gave it to me (as a way to make fun of my less than average height). I took it apart to see how he did it and was never able to get the stupid thing back together.

Hey Mark,

I signed up for the el paso marathon satellite. I was planning on making it a long slow run, but I think I'm going to pace a friend for the half instead.

Maddy didn't recognize it as a dragonfly. It was folded flat to fit in the envelope. She was looking for something inside it. She was five at the time.

She kept calling me names, but luckily my self-esteem is too high for her to make a dent.

I don't know buddy Burt. After your heroic showing at Ragnar, I'm not sure if I'm faster. You definitely have more guts.

Sam, I'm not that altruistic. I just wasn't ready to run a race, so I offered to pace a friend. She would yell at me, because I would speed up and slow down. That was due to the ipod. When the Beasties are on I get pumped.

7:01 pace.  The race was short.  5.9.  I thought about going another .3 to make it 10k, but I just ran until 6.  It was a PR nontheless.  They also started the clock significantly late, by 50 seconds or so.   I'll stick with my garmin time.

The race thinned out pretty quick.  A half mile into it, there was a pack of 3 or 4 who sprinted out (at least sprint by my definintion) and kept sprinting the whole race.  Then there was Curtis and me and another pack that stayed about 100-150m behind.  Curtis had to keep slowing down for me.  I did return the favor at mile 3.  He can't drink and run, so I stopped until he caught up.  I think I may have been able to get sub-7s if it weren't for that.  Maybe not, it was a nice break, and I was able to catch my breath.

Been running off and on. Not too much though. Spent some time at home for most of Apr.  Did a PT test: 3 miles in 20:53.

Ran with the Rocket around 5 miles.

And that's it for Apr.  A whopping 8 miles.

Got some fivefingers while I was at home and I've been running in those since last week.  They make everything hurt.  Even my eyebrows. The longest run so far in them was 3.6 miles   It's not the best environment here for them.  Lots of rocks and gravel. Mostly I just wear them when I run to the pool at lunch.  It's less than a half mile.  Still hurts.  The only thing they've been good for so far is starting conversations.

I guess I was under exaggerating about April's mileage.  Usually, I do it the right way and go overboard.

I ran a bit more according to my watch, but I don't check it as often as I used to.

For the 8th, I ran harder than I had become comfortable with.  8:46 pace (maybe I shouldn't have taken so much time off).  91 F; 14% hum; 3.5 mph winds; cloudy

So they have us show up at 5am to regisiter, but they didn't register us.  We got to listen to a ill-conceived speech about Memorial Day, instead.  Sheesh.

This is kinda a PR.  There was an alarm during the race and I had to lie in a ditch for a minute.  Everyone was supposed to, but not everyone listened.  The guy next to me kept yelling for people to take cover, but they ignored him.  Eventually everyone got up and started running.  Apparently it's more important to get a decent time than be safe.

My moving pace was 6:50, my pace including ducking for cover was 7:11.  Not sure if I could have held a 6:50 if it weren't for the break...

2x400m sprints with VFF as part a warmup for Crossfit.

This is Bedrock on Camp Slayer near Baghdad.  Saddam built it for his grandkids.  I was experimenting with the photo stitching function on my camera.  Those Canon camera scientists have dumbed it down enough to make it Mike-proof.

Ran around Z lake, named for its shape, not because we have 25 other lakes.  Lots of people showed up.  Lots of people faster than me.  I could see all of them ahead of me on the other side of the lake.

The first 1000 people got a t-shirt.  I'm not sure if 1000 people showed up.  I do know that I did not come in 1001st place, though.

I don't think we've got a handle on converting to the metric system.  4.15 miles does not equal 7k.  I was thankful for it being short.

Hey Mike, guessing you are somewhere on VBC. I just got to Victory a month ago. I keep getting these email ads for races but haven't been able to go to one yet since I'm usually at work. Maybe I'll see you at the next one...and good running on a hot morning!

From Mike on Sat, Aug 07, 2010 at 13:43:33 from 155.85.58.253

Yup, Burt. It was dedicated to the child of one of the race organizers.

You're right, Joe. I live in Liberty and work in Victory for J7. How about you?

Let me know if you're up for a group run or workout.

From SlowJoe on Sun, Aug 08, 2010 at 05:51:29 from 214.13.130.104

I work at Al Faw in the JOC. I'm expecting my schedule to shift a bit by the end of the month, to where I can actually run in the mornings so I will hopefully take you up on that offer.

From Mike on Sun, Aug 08, 2010 at 10:14:07 from 64.235.121.242

If mornings aren't an option, there's a group of us that do Crossfit out at Slayer. We leave around 1730 and are back between 1900-1930. I work in building 36. If you look out the front of the palace between 2 and 3 o'clock, then it's the building on the water flying the red castle flag.

From SlowJoe on Mon, Aug 09, 2010 at 02:16:02 from 214.13.130.104

I appreciate the offer Mike, thanks. I had this dumb idea to train for my first marathon while I am here so that's giving me about all I can handle right now - I think crossfit would fully cripple me the rest of the way. Anyway, keep in touch - I'm definitely up for some runs when my schedule changes at the end of the month.

From Mike on Mon, Aug 09, 2010 at 02:32:06 from 155.85.58.253

...but it will cripple you in a good way.

Anyway, next month you'll have to come run with us.

Let me know if you change your mind about the Kool Aid.

Woke up on time, but I went to the wrong place to meet Antonio at 0430.  Planned on a slow 8, but saw that they were setting up a race and registered.  Antonio showed up there too.

Started a couple minutes late, due to lines at the port-a-john.  It was a weird experience.  Starting so late, you end up passing people throughout the race.  I liked it.  It made me feel like I was accomplishing something.  Usually I'm stuck in a pack and struggle to maintain pace.

How do these races work? Is it just Americans? Military?

Nice job by the way.

From Mike on Tue, Aug 10, 2010 at 04:19:01 from 155.85.58.253

Races are organized by individual units, so there's lots of variation in how they work. I've always seen them open to all, though. Military and civilians. I've seen a few Third Country Nationals running, too. Ugandans, Filipinos, Brits... I don't think I've seen any Iraqis run in one, though.

From SlowJoe on Tue, Aug 10, 2010 at 13:08:57 from 84.11.148.246

Joe - if you hang around Mike's blog long enough, you're going to find out that he's the funniest blogger around. He's funnier than KP, Merri, Walter, even RivertonPaul.

No pressure Mike.

From Mike on Tue, Aug 10, 2010 at 14:03:40 from 64.235.121.242

They didn't send a mass email, Joe. They did it the old fashioned way and posted flyers. And only gave tee shirts to those who pre-registered. By the way, I almost hit your office. My buddies and I were hitting golf balls from the back of our building trying to hit a gazebo, but I've got a wicked slice.

I'm glad I can make you laugh Burt.

From SlowJoe on Tue, Aug 10, 2010 at 23:48:49 from 214.13.130.104

That is quite a slice - as long as you miss those fancy black Suburbans parked up front you're probably ok. You have a nice back porch, just needs a couple of rocking chairs.

During our Thurs long run, Antonio said that he heard a rumor about a half marathon on Sun. On Fri morning, he was able to confirm it. That night I learned that they were also offering a full, so I had about 33 hours to prepare for a marathon. Except for the occasional half marathon, I haven't run more than 13 miles since I was training for my first marathon in 2007. So instead of trying to cram a bunch of running in, I prepped by trying to convince as many people as possible to do it so I wouldn't be alone and applying a liberal amount of Body Glide to strategic areas.

I hit the wall before I had started running, right at 3:20 when my alarm went off. I didn't sleep well the night before. I went to Will's going away dinner and some friends invited me over for a BBQ afterwards. They're leaving soon, so I acquiesced. I didn't get to bed until past midnight.

When I showed up at the race start, I told Antonio that running a full is stupid and we should just do the half. He said, "No, we're doing the whole thing. You talked me into it (he was the only one who agreed) and I'm not going to !#$%^* out."

When the race started Antonio took off like a bat out of hell while I settled into an easy pace. It was dark and a good quarter or half mile was on gravel. Not many people turned out, because it wasn't advertised base-wide. The race thinned out pretty quick. They marked the turns with spray-painted arrows on the road, but there weren't any lights so I didn't see the arrows until I was on my way back and the sun had come up. Luckily I was running with a guy who had seen a map of the race prior and knew where to turn, otherwise I would have been lost.

I ran into Antonio around the 6 mile point for me and the 7 mile point for him (the turnaround was at 6.5 miles). I yelled some encouraging words to him. It was some string of obsenities to motivate him. I didn't see him again until I made it back to the finish line for the half where he was waiting for me. Turns out he had raced the half and was spent. He wanted to leave. We had taken separate cars so he didn't have to wait for me or anything. At that point, I had it in my head that I was doing the whole thing and yelled more obsenities at him. He chased me for a little bit then went back.

I had finished the half in good time for me, so I was on track for a PR. I wasn't hurting and I figured I could drop to a real comfortable pace and still PR. So I slowed down a bit and enjoyed my inner dialouge. By and by, I would stop a little longer at the aid stations and drink a few cups instead of trying to drink and run. But, I had learned that there were only 2 guys in front of me. And one had started walking. So I picked it up my pace thinking I may get 2nd place.

At the 19 mile point I ran into the the guy walking. He was at his 20 mile point, since he was just coming from the turnaround and I was on my way there. A little later, I ran into the other guy. He was about a half mile ahead of me. I was feeling good about this. I wasn't hurting too bad and I wanted to place in a marathon. At my 20.25, I had the walker in my sights, however I saw this shuffling mass wearing neon green shoes. It was Antonio. He started about 10 minutes after I had left the halfway point. It took that long for the guilt to set in. It was good to see him, so I ran back to the turnaround and we ran the rest of the way together. It added another mile and a half to my run too.

I wasn't that concerned about placing. It would have been nice, but I just wanted to see if I could endure it. Overall it was pretty pleasant. The volunteers were very supportive. The weather felt cool. It was 80F when we started and it warmed up to 93F by the time we finished. There were clear skies. And Antonio kept telling me how much he hated me. Good times.

Mike ~

Seriously, you are so stinkin' cool (my guess is that Antonio is as well). True, you are a bit crazy (really - who turns around and runs back a mile and a half during a marathon?).

Congrats on the marathon +.

(Btw, I want you persuasion skills. I can't believe you talked anyone into that!!!)

From Mike on Sun, Sep 12, 2010 at 12:07:12 from 155.85.58.253

Teena, I wish I had your luck. The aid stations were free of hardware (screwdriverless). And I was looking. All I could find were a bowl of the volunteer's raisins which I hate but ate anyway.

That is awesome, Mike. I started planning for my upcoming marathon a year ahead of time and you guys did it on 33 hours notice. I'm glad you were able to guilt Antonio into finishing. Tell him congrats for me. And shoot me an email when y'all are healed up enough for a run.

Really good pace for 9+ miles. Uncle Mark sounds like he is even more hardcore than Antonio.

From Mike on Wed, Nov 24, 2010 at 00:44:17 from 66.27.21.113

Pretty hardcore when you take into account that he's recovering from a crossfit related stress fracture in his foot and from a bicycle/SUV collision (he was on the bike) where he broke is ankle earlier this year.

From SlowJoe on Wed, Nov 24, 2010 at 01:29:08 from 109.70.68.174

Ouch! I'd hate to see how fast he goes when healthy. I'm guessing you would hate it too if you were runnig with him. Might be some gurgling and gasping sounds mixed in as well.

From Huans32 on Wed, Nov 24, 2010 at 13:30:17 from 138.64.8.53

Man very hardcore indeed. Great run none the less bro. Have a great Thanksgiving.

What kind of Thanksgiving did you have?

One with friends that qualify as family.

Took my cousin to hike the backway to the Hollywood sign, but we had to turn back after a mile.  It was a steep mile up and a gently sloped mile and 3/4s down.  She is now motivated to quit smoking.

Ruck 40-45 lbs in Griffith Park with a hiking group.

Elevation gain 800+.

Stopped several times for the stragglers which sucked.  I had worked up a sweat and I was too cold to stand around.  I didn't know the route and I have a sense of direction that gets thrown off in a parking lot, so I had no choice but to stand and freeze.

That sounds like a really fast pace with a 40-lb ruck.

Rucked for 5.88 miles with 700 ft elevation gain then gave it to my 15 year old cousin who asked how much it weighed.  He rucked the last 1.7 miles with 50 lbs.  I was very proud of him despite the fact that he sports a mohawk.

Is it my imagination or these ruck run are being done at a faster pace?

From Mike on Sat, Dec 11, 2010 at 18:58:03 from 66.27.21.113

They're fluctuating Eric. The goal is faster though :)

Aborted tempo attempt.  Shot for 4 at a 7:07 pace, ended up with 2 at a 7:31.

I'll give my legs a rest and try again...
